Windows 11 October 2026 update: what's new and fixed

Hello Folks,
We at Daily Techocracy are back with some juicy info for all you kind readers....lets get to it !!
Microsoft released its October update for Windows 11 on 13 October. It's the regular monthly Patch Tuesday update, and this one brings a few handy new options along with a long list of fixes. It also carries a warning for anyone still on Windows 11 version 24H2 Home or Pro.
Quick answer: The Windows 11 October 2026 update is KB5127648, released on 13 October. It adds an "Open apps maximized" setting, Copilot key remapping, new touchpad scrolling gestures and better file previews, and it fixes Bluetooth, printing and gaming bugs. Install it from Settings > Windows Update. If you use 24H2 Home or Pro, this is the last update that version will ever get.
What is the Windows 11 October 2026 update?
It's a security update with the number KB5127648. It covers Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2, and Microsoft released it on 13 October 2026. It also includes everything from the optional update that came out in late September.
The new features are rolling out in stages. That means you can install the update and still not see a new option straight away. Microsoft turns features on slowly, and some may reach Europe later.

In short: KB5127648 gives you build 26300.9711 on 26H2, 26200.9711 on 25H2 and 26100.9711 on 24H2. You can check yours by pressing the Windows key, typing "winver" and pressing Enter.
What's new in Windows 11 this month?
The most useful additions are small ones: a setting to open every app full-screen, a remappable Copilot key, new touchpad gestures and better file previews. Here are the ones most people will notice.

Open apps maximized
This new setting makes apps start full-screen instead of in a small window. You'll find it under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. It's optional, and a few older apps may ignore it. I'd switch this on at once if you hate resizing windows every time.
Copilot key remapping
If your keyboard has a Copilot key, you can now give it another job. Microsoft says it can be set to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key, and Windows Latest also lists options such as Search. The setting lives under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
New touchpad gestures
You can now scroll with one finger along the left or right edge of the touchpad. You can also keep scrolling by moving your finger towards the edge. Both are in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
Better previews and a few extras
- File Explorer: PDFs preview again in the preview pane. HTML files show a warning first, and you can choose to preview them anyway.
- Camera Roll backup: a new option can back up your phone photos to OneDrive. You set it up by scanning a QR code. It only appears for some users.
- Tips widget: a new widget with short Windows tips. You can add it to the Widgets board or the lock screen.
- Emoji 17.0: new emoji such as a distorted face and a fight cloud. Press the Windows key and the full stop to open the picker.
- Wallpaper and Bluetooth: wallpapers change more reliably, and Bluetooth audio, calls and connection status work better.
Microsoft has also dropped PC-to-PC migration. It now points people to Windows Backup instead.
What does the October update fix?
It fixes a long list of everyday bugs, mainly around Bluetooth, printing, gaming and sign-in. The ones that matter most to regular users are in the picture below.

Microsoft's notes say the update fixes mouse stutter in some games, fingerprint sign-in failing after a cold start, and printing failures that began after the August update. It also fixes a bug that could crash File Explorer or show a black screen on shared work PCs. If your laptop's Wi-Fi acts up too, see our guide on fixing Wi-Fi that drops after sleep on a Windows 11 laptop.
Is this the last update for Windows 11 24H2?
Yes, for Home and Pro. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro stop getting updates with this release, so they won't receive any more security fixes. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 stay supported until 12 October 2027.
If that's you, move to a newer version soon. Go to Settings > Windows Update and look for the offer to update to Windows 11 version 25H2 or 26H2. It's free.
How do I install the update?
Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. The update downloads and installs by itself, and you restart when asked. Make a quick backup first if your PC holds anything you can't lose.
You can also download KB5127648 from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Most people don't need to.
Are there any known problems?
Microsoft lists two. Some USB audio devices may not start or may play no sound, and an earlier September fix only partly solved it. Also, people who don't have admin rights may fail to connect over Remote Desktop to work-managed PCs that have Administrator protection turned on. The second one mostly affects offices, and Microsoft hasn't released a fix yet.
The full details are on Microsoft's official KB5127648 page. We also covered another big Windows change earlier this month, search quick actions and the smarter Copilot.
Should you install it?
Yes. It's a security update, and the fixes are real ones. If you rely on a USB headset or DAC, check that it still works after installing. If it doesn't, you can uninstall the update from Settings > Windows Update > Update history while you wait for a fix.
